Top Ten Plays from the Pittsburgh Steelers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1NS275migE

The Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC.  Pittsburgh has won more Super Bowl titles (six), won more AFC Championship Games (eight), played in fifteen, and hosted more conference championship games (eleven)  than any other AFC or NFC team.  The Steelers also won their most recent championship Super bowl XLIII, on February 1, 2009.
Steelers were founded on July 8, 1933, by Art Rooney.  The ownership of the Steelers has remained  within the Rooney family since it's founding.  The current owner, Art's son, Dan Rooney,  has given most of the control of the franchise to his son, Art Rooney II.
January 22, 2007, Mike Tomlin became the first African-American to be named head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in its 75 year history.  Tomlin also became the third consecutive Steelers Head Coach to go the the Super Bowl, equaling the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer, in the achievement.  At the age of 36, Tomlin was the youngest head coach to ever win the Super Bowl, and he is only the second African American coach to ever win the Super Bowl, Tony Dungy being the first.  The 2010 season made Tomlin the only coach to reach the Super Bowl twice before the age of 40.

So there ya go Warren and all you other Terrible Towel Die hard Steeler fans!!   I hope you enjoyed this Steeler Tribute today!!   For those of you who are now wondering, yes I will also do the same for the Green Bay Packer  fans!!

Has all this Trivia made anyone hungry?  Check out these fantastic recipes below.  Great idea for a Super Bowl Party!

Grilled Tomato and Chipotle Salsa

This spicy salsa is great over any grilled meat and fantastic as a dipper for tortilla chips or spicy Wonton Crisps.  This is really great as a relish on grilled hot dogs too!

Ingredients:
4  Roma Tomatoes
1/2  Onion, diced
3  Tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2  Tablespoon Homemade Gourmet Chipolte Rub

Directions:
1.  Place Roma tooatoes on a pre-heated grill of medium heat.  They will fit nicely on the edges of a grill already filled with other items.  Cover grill and cook.  After 5 minutes, turn the tomatoes and continue to cook another 5 minutes.  The skin will begin to peel away when done.

2.  Let cool to touch and chop.  Toss with the reamining ingredients and serve immediately or chill.  Will keep refrigerated for up to one week.

Grilled Vegetable Medley

Make extra of this great grilled medley because everyone will want seconds!  It's Delicious!

Ingredients:
1 carton grape tomatoes
1 package pearl onions (white or red), peeled
1 large carton button mushrooms, stems removed
Olive Oil
1 Homemade Gourmet Garlic basil Seasoning
Large metal skewers, or a package of wooden skewers
(if using wooden skewers, soak in water for several minutes before using)

Directions:
1.  Place tomatoes, onions and mushrooms on skewers.  Put each item on separate Skewers.  The tomatoes cook faster than the onions and mushrooms, so you will need them to be on separate skewers.

2.  Rub each skewer with olive oil and place onto a pre-heated grill of medium heat.  The tomatoes will cook in about five minutes; onions and mushrooms about ten minutes.  Turn each halfway through cooking time.

3.  Remove from grill and slide off a skewer into a serving bowl or platter.  Drizzle with a little more olive oil and sprinkle generiously with Garlic Basil Seasoning.  Serve as a warm vegetable salad or use to top grilled steak or chicken.

variation:  If using to top grilled steak, burgers or chiken, place over meat at end of grilling time.  Cover with a slice of provolone cheese, cover grill and let cheese melt (about five minutes).  Remove from grill and serve.  YUM!!!

Memorable Moments in Super Bowl History and a Glazed Baby Back Ribs Recipe

As Super Bowl XLV approaches,  it's a great time to take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in Super Bowl history.  Check out the top plays below, and even some video.

David Tyree's Catch in Super Bowl XLII
The Giants were down 14-10 on their own 44-yard line facing a third-and-five with just 1:15 left in the game against the undefeated Patriots. Eli Manning somehow battled through a heavy pass rush, launched the ball down field and receiver David Tyree snatched it, pinning the ball against his helmet for the catch. That catch kept New York alive, eventually leading to a New York victory.

Elways Leap in Super Bowl XXXII
The Broncos and Packers were tied at 17 when John Elway scrambled and improvised on third-and-six from the 12-yard line. He helicoptered through the air, absorbing two monstrous hits in the process to give Denver the first down, eventually leading to Terrell Davis scoring the go-ahead touchdown two plays later.  See this play by clicking on link below!
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja69mTbL388&feature=player_embedded

Marcus Allens  Beautiful TD Run - Super Bowl XVIII
With the Raiders already ahead 28-9 over the Redskins, quarterback Jim Plunkett handed the ball off to Marcus Allen and let him do the rest. Allen danced in the backfield, and then made his way through the Redskins defense for a 74-yard rushing touchdown. Allen ran for 191 yards and was named Super Bowl MVP.

Devin Hester's Opening kick off return - Super Bowl XLI
Nobody had ever done it before. Fans couldn't have asked for a more exciting opening kickoff in the Super Bowl. Bears returner Devin Hester took the opening kickoff to Super Bowl XLI and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown, easily running past everyone on the field.

Super Bowl Party Games!

Get up and move around at the party with games.  The last thing we want is for our guests to come, drink and sit on their butts for four hours!  Chances are, you won't get them up off that couch when its time to go home!!  So get them up and moving around with some fun Super Bowl Games.  I'll start of with a fun game for the "Under age crowd" actually the over age crowd will enjoy this game too!  Good half time game!

Out door Football Toss

Purchase two hula hoops at your local dollar store or Walmart.  Have the kids line up into two teams.  Next have an adult hold a hula hoop a few feet from each child at the front of each line.  The first child has to throw the football through the hoop.  Then, for the next child, move the hula hoop another foot back and repeat until the distance gets challenging.  Whichever team throws the most balls through the hoops wins.

For prizes have goodie baskets made up with popcorn, pretzels, soda (all the healthy stuff!) or give nerf footballs to the kids.  Depending on the ages of the kids, you might want to give the losing team a gift too!  Maybe give the winning team first choice of prize.

Beer Commercial Game

Obviously for the 21 and over crowd at your party!  Serve the most popular kinds of beer, the ones that pay  millions to advertise on Super Bowl Sunday!!  When a particular beer commercial comes on and someone in the room is drinking that particular beer, they win and they have to do a shot, or you can choose to give them a prize instead.   You can even change it up to where that person can pick a person to do a shot.  Have fun and be creative with this game.

Trivia

Trivia is always great fun.  Don't forget prizes!
Ingredients
  • Index Cards
  • Markers
To Play
  • Play trivia either before the game or after.
  • Read off each of the trivia questions. The person who gets the right answer wins a prize.
  • Turn this into a drinking game by making all of the losers drink up.
So here is a little, or a lot, of football History for you to make your trivia game:

It's hard to believe it's been more than 40 years!
The very first Super Bowl was played in 1967. Yep. It was at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles on January 15 (seems early--but these are the facts). Who played? Well, the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League went at it and the Packers blew the Chiefs away with an impressive 35-10 victory.
How did it come to be? "On August 14, 1959, Dallas businessman, Lamar Hunt, called for the formation of the American Football League. This league was organized and began play in 1960. Others in football thought the idea of the new conference was so crazy that the teams that formed this new conference were referred to as the 'Foolish Club.'
"As it turns out, this newly founded American Football League had a profound effect on pro football. On June 8 of 1966, the AFL and the NFL announced a merger. At the end of the 1966 season these new conferences played against each other in the first ever Super Bowl."
And the rest is history. And now it is a tradition. Over 22,000,000 TVs are tuned into the Super Bowl and of these 22,000,000 households, 13.5 million are having parties. These figures are, of course, pure fiction. But I wanted to emphasize the importance of celebrating the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XIX, January 20, 1985... The San Francisco 49'ers beat Miami, 38 to 16.  Played at Stanford Stadium.  I was there!!  I sat on the fifty yard line two rows below Tony Bennett, who was surrounded by women!!  Dad was coaching at Stanford at the time and was given three tickets.  My sister Jan and her husband Pat sat on the other side of the field in the end zone.  I was the lucky one and had no problem going alone to sit on the fifty yard line!!  I met so many people, and it was a memory that will last a life time for me!  Here is my proof!  I sure wish I could fit into that jacket again!!

Okay, sorry, enough of my walk down memory lane....  now for some more Trivia  facts for you to use at your party:

Lisa's Super Bowl Count Down... Food, fun and friends!

No better time to gather your friends and family for a great party!  Super Bowl has always been one of our families favorite time to have our friends over!  Over the next  18 days I will offer you some delicious recipes for main meals, dips, deserts and even throw in some fun games (some for the 21 and over crowd!)  I hope that you enjoy the Count Down to Super Bowl Sunday with me, and even give some of these recipes a try!

Lets Kick off this party with a tasty cocktail!

You should always have a nice choice of Cold Beer and plenty of it!  That is just a given!  But how about offering a nice cold drink as well.  Homemade Gourmet has two wonderful Party Blenders that cost $6.75 each.  They are great frozen or on the rocks!

Cranberry Margarita Party Blender Mix
#07.0003

This is a wonderful drink mix.  All you add is Cranberry Juice, Tequila and ice.  Makes about 4 - 48 ounce pitchers.  You also have the option of making this without the Tequila.

Sassy Sangria Party Blender Mix
#07.0004

With this mix, you just add canned fruit, ice and a bottle of wine of your choice.  Makes about 16- 6 ounce servings.  You have the option of adding fresh fruit if you prefer.  Either way, it's a wonderful sweet sipper!

Helpful Party Hint!

Make your party blenders ahead of time for easy and fun serving when your guests arrive or when you are standing over a hot grill!

Follow the directions on the label of Homemade Gourmet Sassy Sangria or Cranberry Margarita Mix, adding the alcohol as directed.  However, instead of mixing in a pitcher, put it into a zip top, gallon sized freezer bag and freeze overnight.  Mixture will freeze as a slush instead of ice, making it easy to scoop and serve on glass at a time!

Italian Ice Variation:  Scoop the frozen slush mixtures with rounded ice cream scoops and place into martini or margarita glasses.  Serve with a spoon.  Scoop and serve table side - it melts quickly!

Nonalcoholic version of our Sassy Sangria Mix:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Homemade Gourmet Sassy Sangria Party Blender Mix
1 2-liter bottle ginger-ale or lemon lime soda
1 20 ounce can pineapple chunks, undrained
1 10 to 16 ounce jar maraschino cherries without stems, undrained

Directions:
1.  In a large container with a lid, mix together all ingredients.  Stir until mix is completely dissolved.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.
2.  Pout chilled punch into a serving bowl and serve cold with fruit in each serving.

Tip:  to make two batches, fill an ice ring mold with part of the punch (no fruit) and freeze overnight;  refrigerate the rest.  When ready to serve, place the ice ring, in the punch bowl to keep it cold while serving.  Don't have an ice ring mold?  Use a Bundt pan or medium size bowl instead.

Freezer pops for adults or kids:  For those that don't want the alcoholic slush, but love the flavor of the frozen drinks, follow label directions to make the non alcoholic version and pour into freezer pop forms.  Freeze and serve as a treat or as dessert.  (Alcohol can be added to make adult pops as well)  I like to serve these in a metal bucket of crushed ice.

So there ya go folks!!  If this sounds like something you would like to serve at your party, just go to the top of this page and where it says "to order Homemade Gourmet, click on the link", sign in and place your order.  The product is shipped right to your doorstep!!  Enjoy and if you have any other ideas for this mix, let me know and I'd be happy to share it!!

Stay tuned for your next Super Bowl Party idea coming soon!!!
